BETHESDA, Md- (July 22, 2015) – Chief IP Counsel are split on whether their companies are sufficiently focused on foreign IP threats, with 51 percent saying the focus on global threats is not adequate, according to a new survey by Consero Group, an international leader in creating high-level, invitation-only events for senior executives. The results were reported as part of Consero’s Global Intellectual Property Management Data Survey.

In addition, half of surveyed executives did not believe their companies are sufficiently familiar with global patent laws. Executives were also divided on the issue of properly conveying sensitive information to global partners, with 50 percent believing that their companies do not have an effective method of conveying sensitive information to international partners without jeopardizing IP.

Furthermore, an overwhelming majority (89%) of those surveyed felt that foreign governments are not doing enough to mitigate IP threats and thefts.

“The protection of intellectual property in foreign markets is crucial to success in today’s global environment,” said Paul Mandell, Founder & CEO of Consero. “With this in mind, it is critically important that Chief IP Counsel strengthen their focus on foreign IP threats and theft, particularly given the lack of confidence of these executives in foreign governments to mitigate such threats.”

Additional Findings Included:

  • Majority Dissatisfied with Interaction with IT: Sixty percent of Chief IP counsel were not satisfied with the IT department of their organization.
  • Outside Counsel Staying Within Budget: Seventy percent of executives surveyed reported they had not exceeded their outside counsel budget in the past 12 months.
  • Majority Have Access to Necessary Resources: Close to three-quarters (71%) of executives believed that they have access to the resources necessary to manage their team effectively.

The 2015 Global IP Management Data Survey was developed in connection with Consero’s June 2015 Global Intellectual Property Management Forum for Fortune 1,000 Chief IP Counsel. A total of 45 responses were provided.
