January 2014 General Counsel Report

The last year was a particularly demanding one for America’s general counsel. With a more competitive global marketplace than ever, and a slew of new international rules and regulations, these executives have been called upon increasingly to provide more than just legal advice to their corporate peers.

Moreover, today’s general counsel are under extraordinary pressure to maximize the value of the legal function, spending more time than ever evaluating strategies and resources to boost productivity and quality.

Survey Structure And Methodology

Consero’s Winter 2014 General Counsel Survey, developed in partnership with Applied Discovery, A DTI Company, included a total of 10 questions in the following areas:

  • Departmental Resources
  • Allocation Of Work And Assessment Of Outside Counsel
  • Departmental Role And Value

The questions were posed to Fortune 1000 General Counsel in connection with Consero’s December 2013 General Counsel Forum, which took place in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. A total of 52 responses were provided, yielding data that appears with brief analysis on the pages that follow.
