Consero is honored to announce that Kenneth V. Handal has joined the Forum faculty for Consero's Corporate Compliance & Ethics Forum 2012.
Kenneth V. Handal is an expert in corporate compliance, governance, and risk management. He is a former Executive Vice President, Global Risk & Compliance, and Corporate Secretary, of CA, Inc. (formerly known as Computer Associates). At CA, Mr. Handal oversaw the corporate governance, risk and compliance programs, and the internal audit and global security functions.
Mr. Handal joined CA in 2004 as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. For two years, he worked with an Independent Examiner, appointed by the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York pursuant to a deferred prosecution agreement, which he negotiated concerning conduct prior to 2004. Mr. Handal worked closely with the Independent Examiner to implement best practices for the company in several areas, including compliance, governance, and risk.
Prior to joining CA, Mr. Handal was Associate General Counsel and Compliance Counsel for Altria, then the parent company of Philip Morris, Kraft Foods, and Miller Beer. While there, he helped build the company's enhanced compliance program and oversaw critical areas of their litigation.
Prior to joining Altria, Mr. Handal was a partner with the law firm of Arnold & Porter, where he practiced primarily in the areas of white collar criminal defense and civil litigation. Earlier in his career, he was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Criminal Division, where he prosecuted cases in many areas, including narcotics and tax, commodities, and securities fraud. He also served as a law clerk to Judge Robert A. Ainsworth, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Mr. Handal has argued in the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Handal currently serves as a member on the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Hospital for Special Surgery. He has served on the boards of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, The Legal Aid Society, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York Fund, Inc., New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and the International League for Human Rights, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and Corporate Counsel magazine. He also established the in-house Pro Bono programs at CA and Altria. Mr. Handal is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education conferences.
Mr. Handal earned his law degree from The University of Chicago Law School, where he was managing editor of the Law Review, and his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
